I exist. Therefore, I have worth.
July 11, 2023
I had my interview for seminary this morning.
The admissions interviewer asked me, “What is the most important thing you have learned about YOU? What is it that you know about YOU?”
I began to explain what I had learned through my faith deconstruction process. I lamented that so many of my life’s decisions have been based in fear instead of love, and since I’d thrown off the false construct of hell, I don’t have to live like that anymore. I care less and less what others think of me. Every day, I am more and more free to be exactly who I am. And I’ve recently come to the realization I very much like who I am.
She said, “Yes, I understand. But what is it that you know, beyond a doubt, about who YOU are?”
I responded with the most fundamental thing I have come to know about myself:
“I know my worth is wholly based on the fact I was called into creation. Nothing I do gives me worth. I exist. Therefore, I have worth.”
