The great thing about being “just friends” with David:

I don’t have to wonder why he’s doing (or not doing) what he’s doing (or not doing) and wonder if it’s because he doesn’t like me (or doesn’t like me enough) or if I’m this is or that deficient and lacking and simply not good enough or not sexy enough or not smart enough or not funny enough for him to want me or whatever the fuck ___________ fill in the blank thing that I can base today’s insecurity on.

Instead, I can watch him meet someone, have his first few dates, and see all the places where he’s fucking up, with someone else, and how it has nothing to do with her, and everything to do with him.

And that is an incredibly freeing thing to witness.

It really never really is about us, it’s about them.
